Jesus and the His disciples were confronted with thousands of hungry people in the wilderness. Not unlike the exodus desert centuries earlier, there is almost no food; logic suggests sending them back home. But Jesus, filled with compassion, miraculously feeds everyone. We live in a society we might call a spiritual desert. Yet here, too, our compassionate Shepherd meets our physical and spiritual needs. Instead of scattering us to fend for ourselves, as did the leaders of God’s Old Testament people, He unites us as His one flock. Jews and Gentiles, in the Epistle, find a unity in the peace of their one Savior, and so do we. Today, we have a feast of Word and Sacrament, yes, even here in the midst of our desert wandering, thanks be to God.

Bible Memory Verse:

Ephesians 2:19–20 (ESV) “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,”

Digging Deeper Study:

How does one belong to the household of God?  Can you find the answer in this week’s reading from Ephesians 2:11-22?  The answer to this question is clearly answered throughout Scripture; for example, read Galatians 3:26 and Hebrews 3:5-6.

In Ephesians 2:20, Paul states that the Household of God is built on the foundation of the Apostles and prohets with Jesus as the cornerstone.  For extra insight on this, read: 1 Corinthians 3:11; Revelation 21:14; Ephesians 4:5; Matthew 16:16-18; Psalm 118:22; and Acts 4:11.
Once again, read Ephesians 2:21-22.  What is necessary for this dwelling place?  Also read what Jesus says about His dwelling among us in John 15:4-7.
