“If Anyone Would Follow Me . . .”

“If Anyone Would Follow Me . . .”

Bible Memory Verse:
Mark 8:34b–36 (ESV) “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.  For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

Digging Deeper Study:
In Mark’s Gospel there are three “passion predictions” that frame Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem.  Two of them are this week’s Gospel reading.  Read these three “passion predictions”:  Mark 8:31; 9:30-32; 10:32-34.

How does Mark 8:32 describe the way Jesus was teaching His disciples about His coming suffering?  What does this imply?

In Mark 8:31, Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man.  Compare Jesus’ Son of Man portrayal in this verse with Mark 2:10 and Mark 2:28.  Read Daniel 7 for the background of the expression, “Son of Man”.
