“Black tie optional.” “Jacket and tie required.” “No shirt, no shoes, no service.” There are certain standards of dress for different times and places. When formal attire is required, perhaps we wonder if the garments we have in our wardrobe are good enough. But we need not worry when it comes to what to wear at the wedding feast described in today’s Gospel lesson. When our heavenly Father invites us to the wedding feast at which His Son is the Bridegroom, He supplies us with the perfect attire: the righteousness of Jesus given at our Baptism.

Nothing in my hand I bring;
Simply to Thy cross I cling.
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die. LSB 761:3

Clothed in Christ, you are ready for the feast!

Bible Memory Verse:
Ephesians 4:22–24 (NIV84) You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

In Matthew 22:5, the tenants give some excuses for declining the king’s inviation.  What are some excuses that people use today to ignore God?  What stands between you and God?
The First Commandment addresses putting God first in our lives.  Using a copy Luther’s Small Catechism read the “Christian Questions and Answers” section concerning the First Commandment.
The wedding garment in Matthew 22:12 is one of the important application points of this parable.  How do you think this applies to your life?  Read Matthew 7:13-27.
